My aunt and I love to fish. It’s FREE and a lot of FUN. We enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and competition of who catches the best and biggest fish. Last summer, we fished at
Onset Town Pier almost every Sunday; but we never caught any salt water fish; this year we’re going to try fresh water fishing, hoping to have better luck.
This fully wheelchair accessible fishing area on Long Pond is located at the end of Long Point Road. Long Point Road is right off Bedford Street (Rte 18) in Lakeville.
We were told by a fellow fisherman this area of Long Pond is called Assawompset Pond Complex (APC) – Betty’s Neck. Betty’s Neck is the heart of the APC. He explained that Long Pond shares its waters with Assawompset Pond. It is approximately one mile wide by four miles long. This area is managed by the APC Management Team. Shoreline fishing is allowed. The Rules & Regulations for Recreational Use of the APC and Betty’s Neck are posted on the Lakeville Parks and Recreational Areas website listed above.
Wheelchair access is naturally PERFECT! We always park in a small parking area on Long Point Road on the eastern shore of Great Quittacas Pond. I fish off a stone jetty located here. It is spacious and easy to wheel my chair on the terrain. I am also able to get close to the water to cast my line. It’s a great place to bring a picnic lunch. Yesterday, we used shiners as bait; hoping to catch large bass; but didn’t catch any fish. The video above is of when we caught a 3 lb bass on another day while fishing here!
Long Pond is also a nesting area for American Bald Eagles, so there is a chance you may spot an Eagle while fishing here.
We had to head back home so we gave the shiners we had left to a very nice mom and her son. I had just gotten in the van and the son came over to our van; he was so excited to tell us he caught a Bass with the shiner we had given him. Well out of the van we got; we saw the Bass he caught; we were pleased to see that fish can be caught here, for we have caught none.
I give Assawompset Pond Complex – Betty’s Neck – Fishing Area FIVE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. It’s a great place to fish and it’s ACCESSIBLE to all. Yet, you do need a Massachusetts Fresh Water Fishing License to fish here.

My Aunt Nancy, Jo Jo, Tony and I went fishing here this past Sunday, October 25. We usually don’t catch many fish but Sunday we were lucky and caught a 3 pound bass. Others who were fishing here had good luck catching bass too. We brought our 3 pound bass home, cleaned and cooked it for dinner. It was yummy!
We were so excited that we put a video of it on You Tube @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD2PgDnJuy4
Once again, I give this fishing spot FIVE STARS for accessibility!
