I love the Halloween Season and visiting Haunted Places! Last night my friends and I visited the Asylum of Horror to do a wheelchair accessibility review and experience the scary and horrifying experience of the Asylum. The Asylum of Horror is established in an old Fall River Mill which makes the adventure more captivating. It is now open through the Halloween season from 7 - 11 PM (or later) on days specified on their website.
All parking is Free. General parking is located in a parking lot across the street. Handicap parking spaces are located in front of the main entrance which may be hard to find. You will need to go down a driveway next to the building that leads to this lower parking.
General admission is $17 for Adults, $12 for Children (12 and under) and $12 for Disabled. An additional $2 off coupon is available on their website. You just need to print out one coupon and it will be good for your entire party.
There is a wide wheelchair accessible ramp that leads to the entry door which was held open by one of the characters who warned us of the horror we were to see. I found some areas tight while wheeling along the dark and narrow path that weaves and turns but overall manageable in my wheelchair. Taking the turns at many corners may be difficult for persons who are visually impaired because it is so dark. My friends and I found it helpful to look for the lighted Exit lights that are at every corner to help guide you at the turns. I recommend persons who are visually impaired to bring along a friend to help guide them in this dark path.
At one point on our journey we did find one exhibit that was too narrow for my wheelchair to enter. A guide helped me and lead me through a secret doorway that went behind the scenes leading me off the path that took me back again to the horrifying but thrilling adventure. Some areas have slopes that were a little tough for my manual wheelchair but a Power Chair wouldn’t have any problem with the slopes. Along the path you will encounter different terrains like cement floors, rugs, rubber mats and at some points what seems like grass carpeting. The terrains were not a problem for me to wheel on.
Persons with serious seizure disorders should be aware that they will encounter dark areas with smoke and strobe lights. If strobe lights bring on your seizures you may not want to come to the Asylum.
At the end of the path there are two steps but the manager and a nice employee helped my friends lift my chair down the two steps. The manager told my friends and me that there is usually a portable ramp at these steps. The manager was so nice that he offered to let my friends and I go through the Asylum one more time!!
I give the Asylum of Horror THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Two Stars they would simply need to widen the path that is too narrow for my wheelchair, widen some of the sharp corners that are very tight for a wheelchair to turn and place the portable ramp at the two steps. I give the manager and employees FIVE STARS for being accommodating and sensitive to my needs.
