After my appointment at Auto Ambulator at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital, my friends and I went to the Braintree U.S. Post office to mail a package. We were very pleased to see that this post office is wheelchair accessible with only one problem that needs to be corrected.

There are five handicap parking spaces conveniently located in the parking lot close to the entry door. Both sets of entry doors are my favorite kind of automatic doors for as soon as I approach they immediately slide open. A separate exit door is also a sliding automatic door.

Once inside I was pleased to see that the document service counter where you fill out your postal mailing slips is of a perfect wheelchair accessible height; the letter slot where you place your stamped mail in is of a wheelchair accessible height that is easy to reach; the package weigh station counter is also of a perfect wheelchair accessible height!!

This U.S. Post Office has four customer service counters and NONE are wheelchair accessible for all four are too high for any size wheelchair. The height of the customer service window is approximately 48″ high; the tip of my head reaches the top; it is too high for me to even see the person behind the counter. My Permobil Power Chair would have been able to elevate my seat to a reachable height, yet I was in my manual wheelchair today because I can’t use my Power Chair at the Auto Ambulator because it interferes with the machine.

I give Braintree U.S. Post Office FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the Fifth Star, they would simply need to lower one of the customer service counters to a wheelchair accessible height. This U.S. Post Office did everything possible to make it wheelchair accessible but forgot to make the customer service counter wheelchair accessible, which is the most important counter for it is where one completes their postal transactions.
