funsign.jpgAbout once a month, I go roller skating at the Carousel Family Fun Center in Fairhaven and I thought it would be nice if others out there got an idea on how handicapped accessible the building is.  First of all, the handicapped parking is very close to the door, which is very good. The ramp leading up to the front doors is perfect. 

skating.jpgThere are no automatic doors unfortunately. And there are two sets of doors to enter the building. So there would be no way for someone in a wheelchair to enter alone.  Someone definitely has to open the first set and then wait for me to get through and then hold the second set of doors open for me.  As far as the width of the doors- they are plenty wide enough for a wheelchair.

Once inside, I believe that there would be plenty of room for a wheelchair to move about without any trouble at all. They have tables throughout the building but there is plenty of room still. The height of the tables is a perfect height for a wheelchair to fit under.

carosel.jpgTo get out onto the skating rink floor  would be kind of difficult for someone with an automatic wheelchair to get out on because there is a step to get out to the floor. It would be much easier for someone in a manual wheelchair to get onto the floor.  We had asked if there was any other way out onto the floor and the answer was no.  So, even in a manual wheelchair someone had to physically lower my chair down the step in order for me to get onto the rink floor.

As far as the restrooms go, the door going into the bathroom is wide enough and there was one handicapped stall. That one stall did have grab bars and the height of the toilet and sink was great but there was no plastic covering under the sink which is an ADA regulation.

The lighting was not the greatest for someone visually impaired.  They turn the lights off because they turn strobe lights on for more fun.

The service and staff was very helpful. I would love to go back again.

I give the Carousel Family Fun Center in Fairhaven THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility.  They can earn the other Two Stars by getting rid of the step going out on to rink and putting covering over the pipes under the sink in the restroom.
