postofficesign.jpgAfter visiting the Noquochoke Station U.S. Post Office in Westport, my friends and I traveled to the Central Village Station U.S. Post Office in Westport. We were very pleased to find this U.S. Post Office very wheelchair friendly.

central-villagewestportpostoffices-016.jpgWe were especially interested in reviewing other Westport Post Offices due to a thoughtful comment posted by Westport Selectman  Steven J. Ouellette  on our review of the Westport – North End U.S. Post Office.

Westport Selectman Steven Ouellette informed us that he is ‘very interested in making the Westport post offices more accessible to all’. A committee will address accessibility of the post offices at a Westport Town Meeting the first week of May.

central-villagewestportpostoffices-015.jpgThere are two handicap parking spaces, located up front and close to the wheelchair access slope to the sidewalk. These parking spaces are not easy to see for the handicap symbol is painted only on the pavement; the symbols are very faded; there is no handicap parking signs on a pole in front of the parking space, as I think is ADA required so they can be easily located. This is especially important in New England, for snow can cover the symbols painted on the pavement.

central-villagewestportpostoffices-018.jpgThe main entry door to this post office is wide enough to fit my wheelchair, yet it is not automatic; Ric, my friend held the door open while Kate pushed my manual chair inside. I was in my manual chair today for that is the chair I take to the Healthtrax Fitness Center.

central-villagewestportpostoffices-021.jpgOnce inside I was very pleased to find this post office spacious with plenty of room to maneuver my chair. The see Document Service Counter where you fill out your postal forms is of a perfect wheelchair accessible height.

The Customer Service Counter, where you complete your postal transactions has one wheelchair accessible window that is of a perfect height for my chair. I also noticed that the counter, where you can weigh your packages is also of a perfect wheelchair accessible height.

I give Central Village Station U.S. Post Office in Westport FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility.  In order to earn the Fifth Star, they would simply need to; place wheelchair accessible parking signs on a pole in front of the two handicap parking spaces; and install automatic entry doors so a person in a wheelchair can enter this U.S. Post Office independently.

Again, I give Westport Selectman Steven Ouellette FIVE STARS for his sensitivity to the needs of the physically disabled citizens of Westport and for trying to help make the world more accessible to all!!
