While my friends and I were at Patriot Place, we stopped in Claire’s to see if it is wheelchair accessible, only to be disapointed to find it is not very accessible. Claire’s is a store full of fun accessories for teen girls. Kellie has two young daughters, who I’ve known since their birth. I wanted to look for a birthday gift for one of their birthdays is coming up soon.

The entry doors are not automatic; Kellie held the door open for Kevin to push my manual chair inside. Once inside, I was overwhelmed, seeing many displays that are crowded and set too close together, blocking much of my access. I couldn’t get my wheelchair around most of the displays, limiting my view of many of the accessories this store has for sale.

clairesygp49bd.jpgMany accessories also hang on the rear and side walls, which are also difficult for me to see because there is not enough room between the center displays and walls. Kevin and I went back outside because we didn’t want to mistakenly knock into a display.

Kellie went further into the store to see if the customer service counter is accessible. Kellie reports that the customer service counter, where you pay for your purchase is of a wheelchair accessible height and the ATM/Credit Card Transaction Machines, located in front on both sides of the counter, appear to be easy to reach from a wheelchair.

We all thought, what a SHAME. We’re quite sure that young teen girls in wheelchairs would love this place. Mothers in wheelchairs, who have teen daughters, would probably like to shop here for gifts for their teen daughters too. Yet, full wheelchair access is impossible here.

I give this Claire’s ONE STAR for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Four Stars they would need to install an automatic entry door and space the displays further apart so a person in a wheelchair can access all the merchandise for sale in this store.
