After visiting
Flax Pond Farms in Carver, Kelly, Kevin and I headed to Lakeview Street; Dot the owner of Flax Pond Farms kindly told us they were harvesting cranberries here using the water harvesting method. As we drove down the street it didn’t take us long to spot the cranberry bog with red cranberries floating and glistening in the water.
We parked our van in a dirt area located on the side of the road in front of the water filled bog. From here is a dirt road which led us to the area the machinery was water harvesting the cranberries. The dirt road is not very wheelchair accessible but well worth the experience of seeing the BEAUTY OF CRANBERRIES HARVESTED and it’s FREE.
Here we met some wonderful workers who were harvesting the cranberries. We were told that this is one of many cranberry bogs of the 600 independent cranberry growers for Ocean Spray. We saw men in the water who were helping to gather the cranberries into a large circular area. The workers were very kind and even invited my friend Kevin to climb to the top of the truck to see the process that takes place in a water harvest! From here Kevin took some great pictures. There was a huge truck that had a large pump system that was siphoning up the cranberries; once the cranberries were in the truck they were rinsed and then siphoned through a large hose into another truck that took them to Ocean Spray.
There are more than 14,000 acres of cranberry bogs in Southeastern Massachusetts. You can find more information on Cranberry Harvest Trail Guide @ http://www.cranberries.org/cranberries/bog_tours.html .
We later traveled to another cranberry bog being water harvested in Wareham and posted a video on You Tube for those who have never experienced the beauty of cranberries being harvested.
Again, accessing an area to watch cranberries harvested is not very wheelchair accessible yet I highly recommend taking a trip to see the BEAUTY OF CRANBERRIES HARVESTED. It’s a FIVE STAR experience!
