While traveling to
Quality Van Sales Service & Parts Department for needed adjustments of my Wheelchair Tiedown and Occupant Restraint System (WTORS) in my van, Kevin, Kellie and I stopped for lunch at De Vincent’s Downtown Café in Norton. We were very disapointed to find this restaurant only partially wheelchair accessible.
There is one handicap parking space located in front of the entrance. Outdoor dining is wheelchair accessible and the tables are of a good height.
Entering this restaurant is difficult for there are two separate entry doors; both doors are narrow; once you enter the first door, you need to take a tight turn in a tiny foyer to get to the second door; neither door is automatic.
Once inside we found ourselves in the dining room area; all the tables are wheelchair accessible, yet the tables are set too close together so you may have a hard time wheeling between the tables; we sat at an outer table which was easier to access. The table is of a perfect height to comfortably fit my chair
In the rear of the restaurant is another dining room; it is NOT wheelchair accessible due to a step; yet the tables are all accessible and of a good height. A bar, located on the rear left side is not wheelchair accessible for it is too high; ADA doesn’t require bars to be accessible but Kenny & co believe a small section of all bars should be lowered to a wheelchair accessible height.
Both the bar and the dining room have a flat screen TV hanging on the wall that is easy to view. A smaller TV shows Keno numbers drawn. The lighting in the restaurant is dark and difficult for me to read the menu.
Our waitress was very attentive to our needs and making direct eye to eye contact with me while taking my order. She was very kind, courteous and sensitive. The food was good and the service was great.
If you need to use the RESTROOM here, you are OUT OF LUCK for both the Men’s and Women’s restroom is totally INACCESSIBLE! Both have an entry door that is too narrow to fit any size wheelchair. Even if the Women’s room door was wider, a sink prevents it from opening all the way. Both restrooms are too narrow with no room for a wheelchair.
Unfortunately, I have to give De Vincent’s Downtown Cafe only ONE STAR for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn any more Stars, they would need to install automatic entry doors; widen the restroom door; remodel the restroom to a single person restroom so a wheelchair-seated customer can use it; lower a section of the bar to a wheelchair accessible height; place more space between the tables in the dining room; place a ramp leading to the rear dining room; and increase the lighting. I give our waitress FIVE STARS for being so wonderful.
