My friend and I went to the Dennis Public Library to do a review on its wheelchair accessibility and we were very impressed with what we saw. The handicap parking space is very close to the wheelchair accessible ramp and the main entry doors. The ramp leading to the entry doors are perfect for someone in a motorized wheelchair or manual wheelchair for the slope is not to steep.
The library has automatic entry doors. My friend and I had lots of laughs going through the automatic doors because I wasn’t fast enough wheeling my chair through the doors so the doors kept shutting on me. My friend had to keep pushing the button so the doors would stay open long enough for me to get through the door.
Dennis Library is part of the Clams (Cape and Islands Libraries Automated Materials Sharings) Library network which allows library members to share resources through a computerized system with terminals located in each library.
Dennis Library offers FREE and/or discounted passes to many museums in Boston and Cape Cod as well as some zoos. Library members can also download for FREE audio books, books and music on their website.
The lighting in the library is good for visually impaired persons. Most of the aisles are wide enough for my electric wheelchair to make it through but I did need some help from my friend to make it down some of the aisles.
The restroom door is wide enough for me to get in with my electric wheelchair. The only problem was that I needed a little help to back out of the restroom. There is a large handicap stall inside the restroom that has enough room for me to get into and the only reason why I needed help was because I don’t have the confidence to move around in tight spaces by myself. There are safety grab bars on either side of the stall walls as is ADA required and the pipes underneath the accessible sink are covered like they are supposed to be.
Nicole gives the Dennis Public Library FIVE STARS for wheelchair accessibility because the building is very handicap friendly.
