Yesterday my friends and I stopped at the US Post Office in Elmwood to buy some stamps and do wheelchair accessibility review. I especially like to review all US Post Offices I see since I discovered that not all US Post Offices are wheelchair accessible.
This Post Office has a wheelchair accessible ramp located on the side of the building that leads to the entry door of this Post Office. You will need help with opening this door for it is not automatic. Once inside you’ll find there is a Flower Shop that sells toys, candy and flowers and it’s a cute little shop. Near the front entrance you’ll find this very small US Post Office.
There is a postal service window with old styled bars on it. The postal mailboxes are very old and have old fashioned key holes. I was told by the Flower Shop clerk that this Post Office was commissioned by President Abraham Lincoln in the 1800’s for the soldiers. It’s very old and historical and makes you think of the old west with the barred window.
I loved the Post Office but did find the service window a little high for my wheelchair. I didn’t get a chance to buy my stamps as the clerk who works here was on lunch break and he is the only postal worker at this post office. He’s on break between 12:30-1:30 PM so don’t go to this Post Office between those hours.
Overall, this small town historical US Post Office is wheelchair accessible. It makes me wonder why the
TAUNTON POST OFFICE - ZERO STARS and
FALL RIVER US POST OFFICE - ZERO STARS are not wheelchair accessible at all especially when they are located in large cities where many US Citizens reside.
I give this historical US Post Office THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. The Elmwood Post Office could earn the other Two Stars if they installed automatic doors and install a wheelchair accessible window that is lower for persons in wheelchairs.
