While I was in Falmouth last week I stopped by the Falmouth Post Office to purchase a stamp and do a wheelchair accessibility review. I especially like to review US Post Offices because I discovered that not all US Post Offices are wheelchair accessible and I strongly believe that all US Post Offices should be accessible to all!
There are no handicap parking spaces in front of the Post Office. The closest handicap parking space is on the same side of Main Street but you will need to cross a side street to get to the Post Office.
There is a wide cement wheelchair accessible ramp leading to the front entry door. There are two doors you will need help with opening for neither door is automatic. Once you enter the first door you need to take a sharp turn to get to the other door. The space here is very small and my friends and I found it difficult to turn my wheelchair.
This post office has one wheelchair accessible counter located in the right rear of the building where you will find postal envelopes and postal labels. It is a good height for my wheelchair and I had no problem accessing the postal supplies.
There is a customer service counter in the front of the post office and it is too high for a person in a wheelchair to complete their postal transaction. The end has a lower counter that was not open the day I was here. There was no sign stating it was for persons in wheelchairs and it had a pile of plastic postal containers piled high sitting on it. My friends and I asked a Postal Employee if the lower counter was for persons in wheelchairs and he told us that he wasn’t sure. He went to the back room to ask his boss. He came back out and told us that it is for persons in wheelchairs. We found it odd that he had to ask his boss! We recommended that the Post Office put a sign on it stating it is a wheelchair accessible customer service window!
I give Falmouth Post Office THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Two Stars they would need to place a handicap parking space in front of the building, install automatic doors and place a wheelchair accessible sign on the lower customer service counter.
