Recently, while visiting his family during spring break, Josh, a member of Kenny & co, went to Five Guys in Margate, Florida. Josh was curious to compare the accessibility of this Five Guys with the Five Guys we’ve been to in North Dartmouth and Foxboro.
This Five Guys is located in a shopping plaza; there is plenty of handicap parking spaces right in front of Five Guys. You will need help with opening the entry door for it is not automatic.
The customer service counter, where you place and pay for your food order, is of wheelchair accessible height. The counter where you pick up your food is also of wheelchair accessible. The aisle between the ordering and pick-up counter is wheelchair accessible for there are no 50lb bags of potatoes blocking access in the aisle at this Five Guys. The self-serve soda fountain is too high for a person in a wheelchair to reach.
My friend, Josh reports the main dining area is spacious; the tables are small and set very close together. Located in a small area in the back, he saw four wheelchair accessible tables; these tables were pushed together against the wall; the tables are clearly marked as accessible for they have a wheelchair access symbol printed on them; these tables are of a perfect height for a customer in a wheelchair.
There was no wheelchair access to these tables when Josh visited. As you can see in this picture, access to the four accessible tables was blocked by 50lb bags of potatoes piled high. Josh spoke with the manager to ask why the bags of potatoes were stored in a place that blocks access to the wheelchair accessible tables. Josh told me the manager was very thoughtful and kind; he told him the bags were there only temporarily and would be removed immediately.
To Josh’s surprise, the restroom door does not have a wheelchair accessible symbol yet, the restroom is spacious, wheelchair accessible and fully ADA compliant; the pipes under the accessible sink are even covered, which is a new ADA requirement.
Josh said the manger and employees were all very courteous and friendly; they said it is important to them that this Five Guys is accessible to all!
Kenny & co gives Five Guys in Margate, Florida THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Two Stars, they would need to install an automatic entry door so a person in a wheelchair can independently enter; lower the self-serve soda fountain to a wheelchair accessible height; place a wheelchair accessible symbol on the restroom door; and assure there is always access to the wheelchair accessible tables; and the tables are always ready for a wheelchair-seated customer to use.

I gave up smoking nearly two weeks ago (13 days, 19 hours 23 minutes and 5 seconds) not that i’m counting. Anyway what i’m coming to is this non smoking has fried my brain, I read the title of this as ‘Five Gays in Margate’ lol sounds like an idea for a film.
OK, apart from me slowly going insane, I wanted to say, its great when you come across little gems of accessibility like Five Guys in Margate and even more thrilling when they made things right because the wanted to not because they were told too.
Lets hope your visit has made them think even more. Have you ever thought of dropping places like this an email with a link to the section about them?

Hi DDA access auditing,
We have contacted Five Guys Corporate regarding accessibility issues at the Five Guys in North Dartmouth Massachusetts. They moved the 50lb bags of potatoes that were blocking wheelchair access in the aisle. You can read that review at http://thetravelingwheelchair.com/five-guys-in-north-dartmouth/. Someone posted a very nasty comment on that review.
Thanks for the suggestion,
