I recently had the opportunity to go to Friendly’s in West Harwich. I decided it was a great time to write a wheelchair accessibility review for The Traveling Wheelchair.
Entering Friendly’s there were no automatic doors. I had a hard time maneuvering my wheelchair through the doorway. I got stuck! My friends who were with me helped me get in for I wasn’t able to on my own.
I found it hard to wheel my wheelchair to my seat because the aisles were to narrow and the tables were to close together and crowded. The table I was seated at was too low for my wheelchair and not comfortable at all. The lighting in this Friendly’s was dim and gloomy.
The food and the service were great and my waitress was very nice. At the time I was there I was not allowed to take any pictures. I later went back to do so. I again entered and introduced myself and told them that I was doing a wheelchair accessibility review. The cashier told me that she needed to ask permission from the district manger and they would contact me. I left my name and phone number. Later on that same day I received a call from the district manager stating that I did not have permission to take any pictures of the inside of Friendly’s. They did tell me that I was able to take pictures from the outside so this is the only picture I have.
I give Friendly’s Ice Cream Shop TWO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. They could earn the other Three Stars by installing automatic doors, widening the aisles and the spaces between tables, adjusting the height of the tables and increasing the lighting inside. I also wish the District Manger would better understand the importance and need for places to be more wheelchair accessible.
