After working out at Healthtrax Fitness Center my friends and I traveled to Fall River. As we were driving on South Main Street in Fall River we noticed a new ice cream shop named Gelato House – Ice Cream and Homemade Gelato. I had never tried gelato and decided to stop and experience the flavor.

Gelato is Italy’s version of ice cream. In Italian gelato literally means “frozen”. The two major differences between gelato and ice cream is: Gelato doesn’t contain as much air, and is therefore more intense in flavor; and Gelato is healthier because it has significantly less butterfat and is made with all natural ingredients.

There are few parking spaces in the small parking lot yet none are marked as handicapped. If the parking spaces are full you’ll find some parking spaces close by on South Main Street. There is no inside; the service windows where you place and pay for your order are outside in front. The counter at this window is of a good wheelchair accessible height.  The female employee who served us told us their gelato is homemade for they make it right here. She took our order and served us our gelato. She was very friendly, courteous and kind.

After we all got our gelato we headed to the outdoor seating area. Here are two round picnic tables that are not accessible because the benches are permanently attached. Yet there are many tables that are all at a perfect height for my wheelchair. Both picnic tables have umbrella but the regular tables do not. I love the sun but for those who prefer shade would probably appreciate an umbrella. I tried the coconut banana cream gelato and it was delicious!

I give Gelato House FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. To earn the Fifth Star they would simply need to place a handicap parking space in their parking lot and place an umbrella at some of the tables so a customer in a wheelchair can choose to eat in the shade.
