Recently after my friends and I mailed a letter at the
Middleborough U.S. Post Office we took a stroll along Thatcher Row for we wanted to see the businesses located here. We had never been on Thatcher’s Row which is a brick walkway leading from Center Street to Nickerson Avenue in downtown Middleborough.
We came upon Headquarters Hair Salon, a salon that offers hair, skin, and spa services such as facials and massages. Headquarters Hair Salon recently relocated here from West Grove Street (Rte 28) in Middleborough which had wheelchair access. The new shop is right across the street from the Middleborough Town Hall yet it is NOT wheelchair accessible.
We were really surprised to find Headquarters Hair Salon has NO wheelchair access due to a step at the entry door. Some hairstylists were standing outside and we asked why they relocated to a shop with no wheelchair access; they told us it was the only retail space they found available that was large enough to fit their needs. We found this surprising because there are a lot of retail spaces for rent in our area. Thatcher’s Row has a few accessible retail spaces for rent, yet we assume they were too small.
Well at least there are other Hair Salons and Spas in the Middleborough area that I’ve been to that are fully wheelchair accessible such as Crafty Cuts in Middleborough, David Alan Salon in Middleborough, Maggie’s Hair Etc. at Middleborough Crossing, Procuts in Middleborough and I love getting a Facial at Utopia Salon and Day Spa in Lakeville.
I give Headquarters Hair Salon ZERO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn any Stars they would need to install a threshold ramp at either the front entrance or a side door located on Nickerson Street.

Wasn’t Thatcher’s Row recently renovated? How is it that the shops are missing such basics as a ramp? Isn’t ADA supposed to be considered when the town permits renovations?

Hi Mark, Thatcher’s Row did look like it was recently renovated and we have no idea why the town gave a permit without having them place a small threshold ramp here. We’ll send a note to Middleborough Town ADA coordinator to ask why and we’ll cc you! Thanks

Obviously the owners of Headquarters don’t care about wheelchair access or they would have found a new location that’s accessible. At least there are other places in the area you can go to. I’m sure they’d appreciate the business too!!
