hixville-bridge23a.jpgIt’s Sunday again so my Aunt Nancy, Kate, Tony and I headed back to Westport to see if we could catch a fish. Last week we fished at Lee’s Wharf in Westport . Today we fished from the Hixville Bridge, located on Hixville Road only a mile from Horseneck Beach State Reservation.

Wheelchair sloped access to the sidewalk of the bridge is located on both sides. This sidewalk has plenty of room for my chair. The railing is a little high but manageable to cast a line while seated in my wheelchair. There are peep holes in the railing of the bridge to see the water below.

hixville-bridge23b.jpg hixville-bridge17.jpgTony went down below to see if he could catch a crab because this is the place he caught them when he was young. My Aunt, Kate and I could easily see him from where we were fishing on the bridge. Tony took a raw chicken drumstick and tied it to a 10 foot piece of twine; he connected it to his wrist; he then cast out the line while standing in knee deep water; he then felt a tug; very..very.. slowly he pulled in the line; as soon as he saw the drumstick; he threw the fishing net that was on a long pole over the drumstick and behold he caught a large blue crab.

All of a sudden we heard Tony shout: “I TOLD YOU THERE ARE CRABS HERE – I JUST CAUGHT A BIG BLUE MAMA CRAB”.

caught-a-blue-crab-006.jpg caught-a-blue-crab-004.jpgWe were all so exited. We named the blue crab ‘Oscar the Crab’ for he was a grouchy crab. We packed up our fishing gear and headed back home to cook Oscar, our first catch of the year for dinner.

When we got back home, we let Oscar soak in some cold water in the kitchen sink to clean him; then we placed him in the freezer for a short while so he would be asleep and inactive just in case crabs feel the pain of the boiling water; then we put him in a pan of boiling water; when he turned red, we took him out and cracked open the shell. There wasn’t enough crab meat for dinner so we had it for an appetizer. Oscar was delicious!

I give Hixville Bridge in Westport FIVE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. Even though I personally didn’t catch a fish, it’s a great place to fish while seated in your wheelchair.

Sunday, July 19, 2009 I went back to Hixville Bridge to fish. I finally caught a fish!! It was a beautiful Striper who I named Snipes. I threw Snipes back in the ocean water to be with his family and friends.
