holiday-inn-taunton.jpgToday, my friends and I traveled to “Focus” on Vision Impairment & Blindness Conference at Holiday Inn Conference Center. We attended and presented at the DMR/MCB “Focus” on Vision Impairment & Blindness Conference. We decided it would be best to write two wheelchair accessibility reviews; one of the Hotel and one of Conference Center; we found the Conference Center to be fully wheelchair accessible as the Hotel is NOT.

holiday-inn-002.jpgThere are plenty of handicap parking spaces located in the large parking lot in front of the hotel. Entering the hotel is easy for the doors are automatic double sliding doors; as soon as I approached, they slide wide open :>) Once we entered I found the lobby is very spacious with plenty of room to wheel about in my Power Chair.

The Men’s and Women’s restroom off the lobby are fully wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant. There are spacious elevators to take you to all floors. I even saw a wheelchair lift on one floor that can bring you in your wheelchair up a short distance to another level.

My friends and I approached the Customer Service Counter of the hotel; we asked a very nice female employee if this hotel has a wheelchair accessible room with a roll in shower. She kindly told us that the hotel does have accessible rooms, but NONE of the accessible rooms have a roll-in shower; these accessible rooms ONLY have a lower tub with safety rails.

holidayinn.jpgWe explained that I and many other wheelers need a roll-in shower because transferring to tub would be extremely dangerous for me and many others. She was very kind and told us that she would mention this to management.

If a hotel doesn’t have a fully equipped wheelchair accessible room with a roll-in shower, then we consider the hotel to be inaccessible. All hotel guests should be able to shower. This hotel has a huge banguet room where many weddings and special functions are held. If you attend a wedding here from out of town and need a room with a roll-in shower, you are out of luck.

I give this Holiday Inn in Taunton ZERO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn any Stars, they would need to install a roll-in shower in at least one accessible room. Otherwise, this hotel appeared to be very wheelchair accessible.
