Today my friends and I traveled to Massasoit Community College to see a demonstration of the iBOT Power Chair.
The iBOT is an AMAZING Wheelchair!
The iBOT Demonstration was shown by Kate Adams, a representative and product consultant for the Independence Technology.
The Ibot Power Chair has 4 functions on it. Below are pictures we took of the iBOT during the demonstration which show it in all 4 functions.
First is the Standard/Four Wheel Function. In this mode the iBOT basically operates like a typical Power Chair but it can wheel though some tough terrain in the Standard /Four Wheel Function.
Second is the Balance Function. This mode brings a person in a wheelchair up to eye level of able bodied persons standing and is great in a social setting. This mode is also capable of driving in this mode so you can stroll and chat with a friend at eye level. This mode also allows a person in a wheelchair to elevate the chair so they can reach something on a counter or shelf. The balancing mode will know if you shift yourself forward or to a side or any other way. The iBOT Power Chair will adjust itself so you stay balanced in the eye level position. Amazing!
Third is Independent Stair Function. In this mode you can go up and down stairs independently. You need to use 2 hands and a railing to hold on to while you go up and down the stairs. In this function you need a sturdy railing and there should be 6 inches on each of the railing to get you away from the stairs.
Fourth is the Stair Assist Function. In this mode someone who can’t use both arms can go up and down stairs with the help of a friend. The friend has to tilt you a little back and pull on the bar so the chair knows to go to the next steps.
The iBOT Power Chair is a product of the Johnston & Johnston Co. The cost of the iBOT Power Chair is $26,100.00. Most insurance companies will not pay for it. VHA coverage for eligible veterans may be avaialable to some veterans. My friends and I think the cost is well worth it for a person who needs this. It really could change your life. You can get evaluated for this iBOT Power Chair at Spaulding Rehab in Boston MA. For more information click on the website above.
If this chair became available for all persons in wheelchairs there would be very little accessibility issues in the world. I can’t wait for the day this technology becomes available for everyone so we all can get to enjoy more things that able bodied people can.
I give the iBOT Power Chair FIVE STARS for making the world a more accessible for persons in wheelchairs. Kate Adams did a wonderful job demonstrating all that the iBOT Power Chair can do. Kate deserves FIVE STARS as well.
