My friends and I often go to Independence Mall and find it is very wheelchair accessible. There are many handicap parking spaces in the mall parking lot that are close to the 6 mall entrances. All 6 entrances have automatic doors so you will have no problem with opening any doors. Most of the stores have their doors wide open during the hours the mall is open so entry to stores is very easy.
The Food Court has many food vendors and all service counters are a good height for my wheelchair. Tables in the Food Court are a good height for my wheelchair but I have to sit at the end of the table because the metal chairs are attached and can’t be removed. My wheelchair sticks out into the aisle and can’t fit under the table because the attached metal chairs are in the way.
Independence Mall has 2 restrooms that are located at opposite sides of the mall. Both restrooms have large handicap stalls with the ADA required safety grab bars. The accessible sinks are a good height for my wheelchair but the pipes under the sinks are exposed and do not have the protective covering as is now an ADA requirement.
I give Independence Mall FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. They could earn the Fifth Star if they placed protective covering around the exposed pipes under the accessible sinks in the restrooms and placed a few wheelchair accessible tables with removable chairs in the Food Court.
