After visiting Plymouth Rock, my friends and I went to have lunch at Isaac’s Restaurant that is located on the historic Plymouth Harbor. When I arrived I was happy to see that they have a wide wheelchair accessible ramp that is very easy to wheel up to the main entrance. The main entry door is not automatic so you will need help with opening it.
Once inside I saw a staircase and was disappointed that I wasn’t going to be able to access the restaurant because it is located on the upper level but Ric, my friend saw an elevator that we took to access the upper level. I was very happy to see this elevator!
Once inside the restaurant we were nicely greeted by a host who took us to our table. The tables inside Isaac’s are of a perfect height for persons in a wheelchair. We had a beautiful view of the water from our table that we all enjoyed.
When our waitress came over to the table she didn’t look at me or even ask me what I wanted for lunch. The waitress asked Ric and Amanda, my friends, “What does he want”. I felt humiliated for she acted like I was not even here. I didn’t say a word but thought to myself that this waitress clearly does not respect persons with disabilities nor does she think we are capable of giving a simple order at a restaurant.
Being treated with respect and dignity is as important to me as is wheelchair accessibility as you will understand after you read my ‘understanding’ tab up above on my website!
I told Ric what I wanted for lunch and he told the waitress. Even after the waitress saw that I was capable of speaking she continued to act as if I was not here. I was a bit upset but remained quiet and polite.
We all enjoyed our meals for the food was very good. The restroom is very spacious and has the required ADA safety bars around the toilets and the accessible sink is of a good height for my wheelchair. Yet the pipes under the accessible sink are not covered as is now a new ADA requirement to ensure that persons in wheelchairs do not burn themselves on the hot pipes under the sink.
I give Isaac’s – On America’s Waterfront THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. They can earn the other TWO STARS if they install automatic entry doors, cover the exposed pipes under the accessible restroom sink and TRAIN ALL their staff to treat all persons with respect, dignity and sensitivity!
