This weekend I invited some family and friends to my home. After shopping for some supplies Amanda, Ric and I stopped at Jamie’s II Fine Wine & Spirits to buy a bottle of wine for my company. I was very pleased to find Jamie’s II Fine Wine & Spirits, located in Middleborough Crossing Plaza wheelchair friendly and accessible.
There are plenty of handicap parking spaces located in the parking lot of Middleborough Crossing Plaza. The wheelchair access areas to the sidewalk are clearly marked with bright yellow paint and one is close to the entry door. The entry door of Jamie’s II Fine Wine & Spirits has an engraved sign with a wheelchair symbol; “If you need assistance please ask – our staff is ready and willing to help. Thank You.” I noticed this sign is posted on all the entry doors of the shops in Middleborough Crossing; I was really pleased to see that assistance is readily available.
The entry door is not automatic so Amanda held the door open while my friend Ric pushed my manual chair inside. While looking around I noticed the aisles are all wide and spacious. I only encountered one area by the cooler that was a little narrow so it was a bit difficult for me to open the cooler door to reach the wine I wanted to purchase. Ric helped me; if you are alone an employee will be happy to assist you.
After choosing a bottle of wine for our party, I approached the cashier counter; this counter is a little high but manageable; and I was able to make my purchase easily. The employee was very kind and helpful.
I give Jamie’s II Fine Wine & Spirits FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the Fifth Star they would need to install an automatic door so individuals in a wheelchair can enter and leave the store independently; and widen the aisle by the cooler so individuals in wheelchairs can access all products without asking for assistance.

Hi Jamie,
As always, it’s great to hear from you! I did think of you when I went into the store because it has your name. And I often think of you when I travel in my van and all the wonderful work you and Dr. Schneider are doing to improve wheelchair transportation safety at University of Michigan’s RERC WTS – http://www.rercwts.org/
Last week I testified at the State House and asked our legislators to approve House 3785 and Senate 1948 Bill – “An Act Relative to the Transportation of Individuals Seated in Wheelchairs”. As you know, passage of this legislation would ensure that wheelchair-seated travelers are as SAFE as all other citizens traveling in vehicles.
I hope the weather is warmer and nicer in Michigan!!
