In June, I participate in the
Department of Developmental Services (DDS) ’Community Living’ video filmed by Dvee Media Productions of Waltham. The ‘Community Living’ video is a story of four individuals who successfully moved from a nursing home into the community. I was honored I was asked to be one of four persons to share their story.
I was proud to share my personal experience of what it was like for me to move from a nursing home to my own home in the community. After surviving a massive cerebral hemorrhage when I was 11 years old, I spent 20 very long years living in an institutional setting in a nursing home. Two years ago I was given the wonderful opportunity to move into my own home in the community. At first I was afraid and scared of the change; yet once I moved into the community I soon realized how much better my life became! I’m happier! I live a full and exciting life! I receive much better medical care and all my needs are met!
I shared my personal experience hoping to help encourage others who may be afraid of moving out of an institution to a home in the community. I hope to help others realize how wonderful and exciting life can be living in the community with all your medical needs met.
Dvee Media kindly made a separate shorter video
About Me living in
My Home in the community and my website The Traveling Wheelchair which I founded in hopes it will help the public realize the importance of Accessibility. My mission is ”To help make the world more sensitive, respectful, safer and accessible to all.”
I want to THANK all those at the Department of Developmental Services and Dvee Media for allowing me to share my story.
