longhorn-steakhouse-boston-march-2-2010-017.jpgAfter an appointment at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, my mom, Ric, Amanda and I had lunch at Longhorn Steakhouse located at Landmark Center which is a short distance from BIDMC. We were pleased to find it fairly wheelchair accessible.

longhorn-steakhouse-boston-march-2-2010-016.jpgThere are plenty of handicap parking spaces located inside the parking garage of Landmark Center. The Landmark Center is a multi level shopping mall; with stairs, elevators and accessible ramps. After parking we headed outside to the front and wheeled up a sloped cement walkway which led us to the entrance of Longhorn Steakhouse.

longhorn-steakhouse-boston-march-2-2010-022.jpgThe two double entry doors are not automatic so Amanda held the door open while Ric pushed my wheelchair inside. Once inside we were kindly greeted by a nice host; he showed us to an accessible table that is of a perfect wheelchair accessible height. The dining room has plenty of accessible tables as well as some inaccessible booths.

longhorn-steakhouse-boston-march-2-2010-025.jpgThe décor is of the Wild West; Longhorn Steakhouse serves high quality food; specializing in steaks that are hand-cut, hand-seasoned and carefully prepared. A variety of appetizers, salads, chicken and seafood dishes are available as well. We ordered our lunches and all enjoyed the delicious meals. Our waiter and other employees were very kind, courteous and respectful.

longhorn-steakhouse-boston-march-2-2010-023.jpgThe bar/lounge located in the front of the restaurant has large flat screen TVs hanging on the wall; the bar is NOT wheelchair accessible for it is too high; the booths are not at all wheelchair accessible for there is a step in front of each booth. There is only one wheelchair accessible table set in the corner which is of a good height and has a good view of TV.

longhorn-steakhouse-boston-march-2-2010-021.jpgThe restrooms are spacious, wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant; except the pipes under the accessible sink are not covered as is ADA required. Another problem is a cleaning bucket stored under the accessible sink blocks wheelchair access to the sink.

longhorn-steakhouse-boston-march-2-2010-018.jpgLocated in front is an outdoor patio with tables and umbrellas to shade you from the hot summer sun. All the outdoor tables are of a good wheelchair accessible height.

I give this Longhorn Steakhouse in Boston THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Two Stars they would need to install an automatic entry door so a customer in a wheelchair can enter and exit independently; lower a section of the bar to a wheelchair accessible height so a customer in a wheelchair can enjoy a drink at the bar; cover the pipes under the accessible restroom sink; and remove the cleaning bucket from under the accessible sink so a customer in a wheelchair can access the sink.
