longwood-4.jpgAfter my appointment at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center today my friends I went to Longwood Galleria to grab some lunch so we decided to do a wheelchair accessibility review of this Galleria. The Longwood Galleria is a small mall located in the Longwood Medical Area. It’s mainly a Food Court with a few shops such as a drugstore, a hair salon, a clothing store, photo store etc.

longwood-3.jpgThere are two main entry doors leading inside to the Galleria. The entrance at Brookline Avenue has an automatic entry door which I think is great. Once inside you come to some steps but on the side of the steps is a wheelchair accessible ramp. Then you come to some more steps. There is a small wheelchair lift that you will need to ask the Security Guard to operate for you to get you up to the main level of the Galleria.

The Longwood Avenue entrance is much easier for a person in a wheelchair to access the Galleria. The entry doors are automatic and there is an elevator right inside that you can take to the main level of the Galleria.

longwood-2.jpgThe Food Court has a variety of places to chose your lunch or dinner from. There is a McDonalds, Pizza, Bourbon Chicken, Japanese, and more places. There is also a nice restaurant off the Galleria named Longwood Café but I didn’t go in here today. The tables in the Food Court are a great height for my wheelchair.

longwood-1.jpgIn order to get to the restroom located at the Galleria Food Court you need to open 3 doors and none are automatic so you will definitely need some help. The first door leads to a hallway. You then wheel down the hallway and enter another door that leads you to a small area inside the restroom yet there is another door you need to open to get into the restroom. Once inside you will find the restroom is very wheelchair accessible. There is a large handicap stall with all the ADA required safety grab bars and the sinks are accessible with the pipes under them covered.

I give the Longwood Galleria FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the Fifth Star they would need to either relocate the restroom to an area so one in a wheelchair doesn’t have to go through three doors OR place automatic doors at the doors leading to the restroom. I don’t usually take a Star away for a place not having automatic doors to a restroom but this place is located in the center of many Hospitals and there are many persons in wheelchairs who come here for lunch. Three doors is way too many doors  for a person in a wheelchair to open just to get into the restroom.
