macys-01.jpgI heard that Macy’s was having some good sales so my friends and I headed to the Macy’s at Emerald Square Mall today to buy some clothes and do a wheelchair accessibility review.

We parked on the first level in the covered garage right in front of Macy’s and found many handicap parking spaces right up front. There are some steps leading to the Macy’s side entry door but I wheeled up a nice ramp which sloped around a corner to this entry door. There are two entry doors here that you will need help with opening for neither is automatic and both are very heavy. I checked out all the entry doors to Macy’s and none of the entry doors from the parking lot are automatic. If you enter from inside of the mall that entrance is always open and there are no doors. We parked close to Macy’s because I didn’t plan on going to any other stores in the mall and didn’t want to wheel too far to get to Macy’s.

macys-to-post.jpgThe items for sale in this store are nicely displayed and not too crowded together so I found it very easy and roomy to maneuver my wheelchair around this store. I picked out some great clothes on sale and headed to the check out counter. There is a wheelchair accessible sign at this counter. The counter is lower and a great height for me in my wheelchair. The ATM/Credit Card Transaction Machine is a perfect height too. I noticed that most of Macy’s check out counters have a wheelchair accessible sign.

The saleswoman said that Macy’s takes ‘Pride’ on being very wheelchair accessible and even makes sure that there is a certain number of inches between displays so persons in wheelchairs can travel around without bumping into items.

I give Macy’s FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Star they would need to install automatic doors at all their entry doors.
