My Aunt Nancy, Josh, Kate and I all headed to Plymouth today to see if the renovations at
Plymouth Rock are completed only to find they are not. We decided to have some lunch at Mamma Mia’s Restaurant which is located on the Plymouth Waterfront because we heard the food was very good. There is no parking lot at this restaurant but plenty of handicap parking spaces are located in the public parking spaces close by.
Mamma Mia’s Restaurant has steps leading to the main entry door. We didn’t see a wheelchair accessible sign showing where a ramp is located so my aunt walked around back and saw a ramp. In order to get to the rear of the building where the wheelchair accessible ramp is I needed to wheel down an ally next to the building. There was not enough space for my wheelchair to get by the SUV parked here in the ally. Josh went inside the restaurant to ask who this vehicle belonged to and was told it was the owners SUV so an employee came out and moved it so I could wheel to the ramp in the rear.
The wheelchair accessible ramp is wide enough for my wheelchair but my chair got stuck on the threshold of the ramp because it is worn down to a crack. Josh and Kate got my wheelchair unstuck and up we went into the restaurant. There are two single entry doors you will need help with opening for neither door is automatic.
There is a dining area on the first floor and another dining area located upstairs inside and outside on a deck overlooking the water. There is NO wheelchair access to the upstairs indoor and dining area on deck. The tables on the first floor are very close together and I found it hard to wheel to a table. Once we were seated at a table we all noticed that the table was too low and my wheelchair couldn’t fit.
Our waitress came to the table and didn’t even acknowledge I was there. I asked her a question and she totally ignored me and wouldn’t even look at me. She rudely asked my friends ‘what does he want’? My aunt, friends and I all decided to LEAVE and go to another restaurant that is more wheelchair accessible and where the employees are courteous. We did check out the restroom before we left and it is very wheelchair accessible with all the ADA requirements met.
Once we got back outside we found that the SUV was again blocking access in the side ally for my wheelchair to get back to the main street. Josh went back into the restaurant to ask if someone could move this vehicle so I could wheel by. We didn’t see much lighting at this side ally or in the rear of the restaurant and think it must be a very dark place to wheel here after dark which could be dangerous.
I give Mamma Mia’s Restaurant ZERO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn Five Stars they need to train all their employees how to be courteous, ensure there is always open access to the wheelchair accessible ramp, repair the cracked threshold on the ramp, install automatic entry doors, provide more space in between the tables so a person in a wheelchair can access a table, place some tables of wheelchair accessible height in the dining area, and install an elevator so a person in a wheelchair can access the upstairs dining area on the deck that overlooks the Plymouth Harbor.
