This week my mom, friends and I headed to downtown Middleborough to do some Christmas Shopping. I like to shop in the stores that are wheelchair accessible in my hometown because I know their businesses are hurting due to the bad economy and competition from the larger chain stores. I also appreciate the more personal and friendly service they offer.
Our first stop was at Maria’s Card & Gift Shop. I wanted to look for a special Hallmark Christmas card for my dad, brother, mom, and Aunt and feel nothing says it better than a Hallmark greeting card :-)
Inside is spacious with plenty of room to wheel my chair between all the displays; all the aisles are plenty wide enough for my chair; all items are within my view while seated in my chair. After finding the perfect Christmas cards, I saw some collectible Christmas ornaments I chose to buy as gifts for some of my friends. I also picked a great ornament for my own Christmas tree.
The cashier counter is of a perfect accessible height and I had no problem completing my transaction. Debby and Wendy, two very nice sales persons are very helpful, kind, courteous and friendly. They even opened the door for me when I left.
I give Maria’s Card & Gift Shop FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the Fifth Star, they would need to install an automatic entry door so customers in wheelchairs can enter independently.

Hello Kenny,
First of all, let me commend you for having your own, personal, “buy local” campaign. Thank you, very much for that.
Secondly, thank you for giving four stars to Maria’s. They have earned and have worked very hard over the years to be one the most successful of our downtown businesses.
Perhaps, with your writing, they will search around for a disability, assesibility grant or loan to put in the automatic entry door.
All of the employees and the owner, Judy have shown a great deal of positive customer service to all segments of our great community.That is one of the reasons why they are so successful.
Customer service, is the number one way, to keep a buy local program going on indefinetly.
