marrasmiddleboro-zero-star-pics-041.jpgLocated a few doors from  Hair Depot in Middleborough is Marra’s Barber Shop, another barber shop in downtown of my hometown of Middleborough that is NOT wheelchair accessible due to one small step and an inaccessible threshold at the entry door.

My mom, Ric, Tony and I again thought what a shame it is that my hometown has so many places of business that is not accessible to persons in wheelchairs. Downtown Middleborough is within walking distance from two nursing homes and a senior housing center.

Once Again! Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, “businesses that provide goods and services to the public are already required to remove structural barriers to access by people with disabilities when removal is “readily achievable”. A one step entrance is considered “readily achievable”. The ONLY Massachusetts city or town that I know of who enforces this is the  Cambridge Commission for Persons with Disabilities and Cambridge Human Rights Commission  due to an ‘ordinance amendment’ the Cambridge City Council unanimously passed on March 3, 2008. Obviously, the town of Middleborough does not enforce the ADA.

I give Marra’s Barber Shop in Middleborough ZERO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn any Stars, they would need to replace the small step with a cement slope and replace the inaccessible threshold with an accessible threshold at the entry door. This would allow EQUAL ACCESS to ALL CITIZENS!
