melinas-in-onset-002.jpgAfter fishing at Onset Town Pier with my friends, Tony and Kevin we discovered Melina’s a new restaurant that recently opened in Onset Village. We had built up an appetite and decided to stop by for some lunch. Melina’s, a small restaurant is accessible yet there is no wheelchair accessible seating.

melinas-in-onset-004.jpgHandicap parking spaces are located on the street close to the wheelchair access to the sidewalk. The entrance has a sloped cement walkway; the entry door is wide enough for my chair but not automatic so Tony held the door open while Kevin pushed my manual chair inside.

melinas-in-onset-006.jpgInside is small and cozy with just enough room to turn my wheelchair around. The counter, where you place and pay for your food order is of a good accessible height; I had no problem reaching it to pay for my lunch. The employees are all friendly, courteous and kind. The food and service is wonderful.

melinas-in-onset-001.jpgThere are two small tables that are of a good accessible height but I could not fit comfortably at the table because the table legs are in the way. There is also a rocking chair and a bench for customers to sit while waiting for their take out order.

There are no public restrooms.

I give Melina’s THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Two Stars they would need to install an automatic entry door so a person in a wheelchair can enter and exit independently; and place a wheelchair accessible table in the dining area. The most accessible tables I’ve found have four legs or a pedestal which allows a wheelchair to comfortably fit.
