Melina’s in Onset

After fishing at
Onset Town Pier with my friends, Tony and Kevin we discovered Melina’s a new restaurant that recently opened in Onset Village. We had built up an appetite and decided to stop by for some lunch. Melina’s, a small restaurant is accessible yet there is no wheelchair accessible seating.
Handicap parking spaces are located on the street close to the wheelchair access to the sidewalk.
The entrance has a sloped cement walkway; the entry door is wide enough for my chair but not automatic so Tony held the door open while Kevin pushed my manual chair inside.
Inside is small and cozy with just enough room to turn my wheelchair around. The counter, where you place and pay for your food order is of a good accessible height; I had no problem reaching it to pay for my lunch. The employees are all friendly, courteous and kind. The food and service is wonderful.
There are two small tables that are of a good accessible height but I could not fit comfortably at the table because the table legs are in the way. There is also a rocking chair and a bench for customers to sit while waiting for their take out order.
There are no public restrooms.
I give Melina’s THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Two Stars they would need to install an automatic entry door so a person in a wheelchair can enter and exit independently; and place a wheelchair accessible table in the dining area. The most accessible tables I’ve found have four legs or a pedestal which allows a wheelchair to comfortably fit.

My alert turns up a page a day from you, which is a great thing to see, as you’re providing great info. In my quest for blogroll link exchanges I came across a gal in Seattle, http://dj-astellarlife.blogspot.com/ I wasn’t sure if you’d be interested in.
Keep up the good work, and hello Ms. Stephenson.

I’m sure my readers of ‘The Traveling Wheelchair’ will love the site. It’s a wonderful and insightful blog written by Diane J Standiford who is living life with Multiple Sclerosis. Her blog includes her views on ‘current events, disability issues, entertainment, silliness, politics, health issues’ plus more….
I love her main goal: “the celebration of diversity” !!
