Yesterday, my mom, Ric, Tony and I headed for a bite to eat at Middleboro House of Pizza, located in downtown of my hometown of Middleborough. We’ve driven by it many times and thought it was wheelchair accessible because we saw a sloped walkway leading to both front entry doors.
We parked our van in the side parking lot and headed out in the rain to the front of the restaurant; located in front are two separate entry doors; both have a sloped cement walkway leading from the sidewalk to each door. We were very disappointed to discover that Middleboro House of Pizza is NOT wheelchair accessible for both entry doors have a threshold that prevents wheelchair access:<)
Ric opened the door and asked an employee if there is a wheelchair accessible entrance only to be told “Sorry – No”. If we brought my EZ Access Threshold Ramp that came free with my EZ Access Suitcase Ramp I would have been able to get into this restaurant.
The EZ Access Threshold Ramp is 36″ wide, portable, lightweight, durable and free-standing.
It’s ideal for doorways and raised steps; it’s adjustable for heights ranging from ¾” to 6″ high. It’s intended for indoor or outdoor use.
Wow we all thought; this is the third Pizza place in downtown of my hometown of Middleborough that is NOT wheelchair accessible; the other two are Lindo’s Pizza and Central Cafe in Middleboro.
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, “businesses that provide goods and services to the public are already required to remove structural barriers to access by people with disabilities when removal is “readily achievable”. A one step entrance is considered “readily achievable”. The ONLY Massachusetts city or town that I know of who enforces this is the
Cambridge Commission for Persons with Disabilities and Cambridge Human Rights Commission due to an ‘ordinance amendment’ the Cambridge City Council unanimously passed on March 3, 2008. The town of Middleborough does not have an ordinance amendment which allows enforcement of the ADA.
I give Middleboro House of Pizza ZERO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn any Stars, they would need to place a threshold ramp at one of the entry doors.
