History will be made today and I’m proud that I performed my civic duty by voting! I closely follow politics. I listen to the news and watch all the debates because I believe it is very important for me and all citizens to know and understand all the issues that affect us so that we place our vote for the person we believe will be the best elected official.
I vote at Middleborough High School because I live in Middleborough - Precinct 2. I’ve voted here many times but today I thought it would be a good idea to review how wheelchair accessible it is. The Precinct 2 voting polls are located in the Middleborough High School Gym. Parking is available in a parking lot on the right rear side of the high school, which is right in front of the entrance to the gym. Handicap parking spaces are conveniently located right up front and close to the entrance of the gym.
I am still in my manual wheelchair while waiting for my new power chair so Kate my friend pushed my chair for me today. Ric, our friend had to hold the door open for Kate and me because they are not automatic. Yet, the doors are plenty wide enough to fit my wheelchair. I am surprised the high school gym entry doors are not automatic because I assume there are some students in this high school or visiting high schools who are independent travelers in a wheelchair.
Once inside I was warmly greeted by a nice poll worker. He showed us the direction to one of the four handicap voting booths they have. These handicap voting booths have a counter that is perfect height for me in my wheelchair. The Poll workers always let a friend come with me because I am legally blind and need help with seeing the ballot. After voting, a nice Poll worker showed me where the counting machine was to place my ballot. It is a perfect height for me to put my ballot in this machine.
From here my friends and I drove to Fall River so Ric could vote at his precinct. And now it is just a matter of hours before we hear who our elected officials will be.
I give Middleborough High School – Precinct 2 Voting Poll FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. They can earn the Fifth Star by installing automatic entry doors.
Congratulations President - elect Barrack Obama and God Bless America!

Yesterday became one of the most historical events to take place in American History.I thankyou Kenny for not giving up on helping the handicap and moving forward in your life to have happeness. Never have I felt more proud as an American citizen to see patriotism restored in our country. Barack’s campaign promoting “Change” is much greater than stereotypes surrounding racial inequality. Yes, he has become the First African American President, something that just 60 years ago seemed completely intangible and wholeheartedly unimaginable. Yet, the poles proved that we as a country came together, voiced our opinions and elected the most qualified individual to lead our Country, with promises of progress and prosperity.
I am proud to be a part of the new generation of youth who are colorblind towards race, understanding of sexual orientation and hold true to the concept of having a “Choice.” Along with choice, came our voice. Many Americans took to the poles yesterday, casted their vote, and followed the news anxiously into the later hours of the night to view one of the greatest moments in American History. The outcome, (Barack Obama) broke down racial barriers, unified our country, and gave hope to our future in the years to come. America has always been viewed as country instilled with freedom, patriotism, and democracy. Along with Obama, it is our job to maintain and fulfill our promises in the cause towards progress and the restoration of the United States. I congratulate Barack Obama, and thank all of you for voting. A possibility became a reality, and only time will tell what our future hold for us.
Thank You,God Bless Joshua S. Mendes
