new-york-bagel-005.jpgAfter working out at Healthrax Fitness & Wellness Center Josh, Ric and I went to New York Bagel for lunch. My personal trainer Matt told me it was really good so I thought I’d give it a try and do a review for its accessibility at the same time.

new-york-bagel-009.jpgThree handicap parking spaces are conveniently located next to the access slope that leads to the front door. There are two entry doors and neither are automatic. As we approached the entrance a very thoughtful employee from New York Bagel came over and held the door open me.  She told me an employee always tries to opens the door for a person in a wheelchair if the place is not too busy and they see them approaching. Entering is easy as the doors are wide and easy to get though.

new-york-bagel-013.jpgOnce inside we looked at all the choices of bagel sandwiches on the luncheon menu; there are lots of other food choices as well. I ordered a chicken salad on a wheat bagel.  The cashier counter is a little high but it is manageable; I placed my lunch order and was able to hand the cashier my money with no problem. The cashier was very respectful, kind and friendly.

Once our food was ready we approached the only wheelchair accessible table located in the dining room; all the other tables are booth seats which are not wheelchair accessible. Yet my manual chair did not fit under this one accessible table due to a lip.

The rest rooms are spacious, wheelchair accessible and fully ADA compliant, except the pipes are not covered under the sink as is a new ADA regulation.  The faucet, soap and hand towel dispenser are all within reach.

I give New York Bagel THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility.  In order to earn the other Two Stars they would need to install an automatic entry door so a person in a wheelchair can enter independently; remove the lip from the one accessible table; add a few more accessible tables; and place protective covering around the pipes as is ADA required. All the employees at New York Bagel deserve FIVE STARS for being helpful, respectful and friendly!!
