newbury-comics-004.jpgYesterday my friends and I went to Newbury Comics to browse around and do a wheelchair accessibility review. There are handicap parking spaces right up front and a sloped cement access to the front sidewalk. The door is not automatic so you will need help with opening the door. I was in my manual wheelchair today because my Power Chair is broken and Ric had a hard time opening the door while pushing my manual wheelchair so a nice woman passing by helped open the door for us.

briantree-deangelos-and-newbury-comis-006.jpgOnce inside I found it very hard to get around in my wheelchair for the aisles are not very wide. Three of the aisles had boxes of merchandise at the end. My friends could walk around the boxes but my wheelchair couldn’t get by so I had to go back to front of aisle to get to next aisle. The checkout counter is also too high for me in my wheelchair and I couldn’t reach the ATM/Credit Card Transaction Machine if I wanted to make a purchase.

I give Newbury Comics ONE STAR for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Four Stars they would need to install an automatic entry door, widen their aisles, remove the piled up boxes at the end of the three aisles, lower the check out counter and place the  ATM/Credit Card Transaction Machine in a lower location where a person in a wheelchair can reach.
