This is my review on Payless Shoe Store in Hyannis and their handicapped accessibility. I’m going to start off with the parking; the handicapped parking is about 30ft. away from the entrance.
There are about eight handicapped parking spots, which I think is very good because it makes it easier to find a spot. There is not really a ramp but there is a ground level area in the sidewalk which makes it convenient for someone in a wheelchair to get to the door of the store.
There are no automatic doors so it would make it difficult for someone in a wheelchair to enter the store without assistance. They have one set of doors but it’s a double door so if needed both doors could be opened if one wasn’t wide enough.
Once inside the store there is plenty of room for someone in a wheelchair to get around the store without any trouble. The aisles are wide enough for someone in a wheelchair plus anyone else who might be going down the same aisle. The shelves that the shoes are on; some are at a good height for someone in a wheelchair but there is also higher ones that might make it a little difficult for someone in a wheelchair to reach a pair of shoes they might want to look at or purchase. I think the lighting is great for the visually impaired, it’s very bright.
All of the staff that was working was very friendly and helpful. They had no problems helping me by answering any questions I had or showing me where things might be that I was looking for.
My wheelchair accessibility evaluation for Payless Shoe Store is FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. To earn the 5th star, they would need to install an automatic entry door so customers in a wheelchair can enter independently!

Public restrooms are a biased thing to base a rating on… in the state of massachusetts public restrooms are not a requirement. On top of that, great review.
Small stores can not afford to have public restroms. Due to their limited space most are forced to have their restrooms adjoined to the stock room, so public restroom access is a no no when it comes to loss prevention. Having been a resident of Cape Cod for twenty-two years I am quite familiar with this location. I am not wheelchair bound but having a bad back and severe ankle problems I do find myself in a wheelchair for days at a time. For a frail person three might be a fair rating but for someone of adequate strength a four would be more acceptable as I find those doors to be relatively light when compared to doors such as the entrance to the cape cod mall. I hope this information is interesting.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Stumbled across this site looking for payless numbers on the web and will have to mention it to my chair bound friend whom actually travels a lot. Thanks again.

Hi Jase, Nicole wrote this review of Payless. She lives on the Cape and she writes a few wheelchair accessibility reviews for our website. I’m not sure why she deducted a star for not having a restroom because I don’t expect small stores to have a public restroom…and the only way I would deduct a star is if they had a public restroom that was not accessible. I will gladly change this to a 4 star review . I can’t give it 5 stars because I do require a place to have an automatic entry door to earn 5 stars, even though the ADA doesn’t require it. Thanks for pointing this out!

Having a public restroom is part of retail. If you can’t have one, close up and go home.

Great review but I would like to comment on the statement regarding public restrooms and small businesses. I recently visited Cape Cod and was astonished at the lack of restrooms available to the public. I am a small business owner in Florida and almost every business small or large provides public access to restrooms and there is little to no affect on overhead. After visiting for a week and realizing the lack of restroom availability I did a little research. Massachusetts is one of the very few states that does not have laws requiring bathroom access and it is a health issue that is being reviewed. India has more clean restroom access the Cape Cod and they are a developing nation. Lack of restrooms can lead to health issues with unborn children and their mothers. Limited access to restroom facilities also increases the chances of urinary tract infection. On another note if don’t have a restroom and nature calls chances are you just lost a customer to someone else since they will not stay and shop if they are looking for a restroom.
