plymouth-july-23-2009-017.jpgRecently while strolling through   Village Landing Marketplace in Plymouth my friends and I saw a Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream. I never realized there is another Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream. I’ve been to  Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream & Dairy Store in Whitman and Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream in Middleboro. None of the Peaceful Meadows Ice Creams are very wheelchair accessible due to high countertops at all their customer service windows and inaccessible seating.

plymouth-july-23-2009-020.jpg Peaceful Meadows is open year round daily from 10:00 am-10:00 pm.  There is a lip at entry door that is tough to wheel chair over I was in my manual chair and Kevin had to pull my chair backwards to get over this lip.

plymouth-july-23-2009-022.jpgOnce inside I found all service windows are INACCESSIBLE due to the countertop being too high. There are no public restrooms inside this Peaceful Meadows yet the public restrooms located in the Marketplace are fully accessible and only a short wheel away.

plymouth-july-23-2009-023.jpgOutside are picnic tables where customers can sit and enjoy their ice cream. There is no accessible seating here for all the picnic benches have bench seats that are permanently attached to the table. The most wheelchair accessible picnic tables I’ve seen are the tables at Scusset Beach State Reservation  where the permanently mounted bench seats swing out and the picnic table at Old Silver Beach where the picnic table has an extension on the end to fit a wheelchair.

I give Peaceful Meadows in Plymouth One Star for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Four Stars, they would need to install automatic entry doors so a person in a wheelchair can enter independently;  install a wheelchair accessible threshold at the entry door; lower at least one of the service windows countertop to a wheelchair accessible height; and place at least one wheelchair accessible table on the outdoor patio so a customer in a wheelchair can sit and enjoy their ice cream!
