Recently, Jamie and Crew had to make a stop at the U.S Post Office on Long Pond Road in Plymouth, Ma. Our problems started in the parking lot. Although there are two handicap parking spaces right in front of the doors, neither of them are van accessible. Since the post office is very busy during business hours, this creates a dangerous environment to let my lift down so that I can get out safely in my wheelchair. There seem to be a lot of people that do not realize that a handicap parking space with several lines off to the side of it is designed with vans in mind. These striped lines are where my lift is lowered so that I can safely exit. Please keep this in mind the next time you go to park a car in one of these spaces!!!
Once out of the van, I was disappointed to find that this post office does not have automatic doors. There are two sets of doors you have to go through to get inside the building. Neither set is automatic. It also has a very high threshold that kept me from entering facing forward. I had to be backed into the building. I am sure you all can imagine how embarrassing it is to have to enter a place of business this way.
Once inside, things got better. The whole facility is well lit. They even have extra lighting above the post office boxes so that one can clearly read the numbers. I noticed that the customer service counter is too high for a person in a wheelchair to reach. Yet, we were immediately greeted by the post master. He was very attentive to my needs and made sure I had everything before I left.
When leaving this post office I also noticed that the slot to place a stamped letter into is out of my reach.
We had to give them TWO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. They need more handicap accessible parking for such a busy place. They also need at least one designated for vans with a safe exit off to the side. They can improve by installing automatic doors as well. I do not understand the need for the threshold to be so high in the doorway. This needs to be addressed also for them to improve their rating. They also need to lower one of the customer service counters and letter slot to a wheelchair accessible height.

Hi Jamie and crew, My question is has the P.Ofc. responded to your complaint? I’m so glad you wrote them up because there is no excuse for a United States Post Office to not make it handicap accessible. YOU GO JAMIE!!!! I am very proud of you.
