plymouth-post-office-004.jpgI went to mail all of my Christmas cards at the Plymouth U.S. Post Office on Long Pond Road and was very dissapointed with this U.S. Post Office’s lack of wheelchair accessibility.

Parking is not a problem for there are handicap parking spaces located in the front of the building.

plymouth-post-office-001.jpgEntering is difficult for the double entry doors are not automatic and are very heavy to hold open. These doors lead into a large foyer. Once inside the foyer you can either go through the doors on the left to where the customer service counter is located or through the doors on the right that lead to metered mail room and P.O. Boxes. Neither door is automatic which makes entering difficult for someone in a wheelchair who has no one with them to help.

The customer service counter is too high for a person in a wheelchair to reach unless you have an elevating seat. I was in my manual chair today and not in my new Permobil C350 Power Chair that has an elevating seat because my new chair needs some adjustments for me.

plymouth-post-office-002.jpgIn the metered mail area they have a letter slot that is too high for me to reach. This is a letter slot where all persons would place stamped letters. There is another slot for larger packages that is of a perfect height for me to reach but it is not an open slot so my friends had to open the door on the slot so I could place my Christmas cards in this slot. A person who can only use one hand like me would not be able to utilize this slot without someone helping them with opening the door and holding the door open for it is on a hinge/spring and closes right away.

I saw many customers filling out their mailing slips at a document service counter and I looked around and noticed that there are no wheelchair accessible document service counters for me to use because they are all too high.

I give the Plymouth U.S. Post Office on Long Pond Road TWO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Three Stars they would need to install automatic entry doors; lower a section at the customer service desk that is wheelchair accessible; place a document service counter in the metered mail area that is wheelchair accessible; and install an open letter slot at a wheelchair accessible height so that disabled persons can easily slide their mail inside.
