us-post-office.jpgI decided to go to the East Taunton Station Post Office today because I had something to mail out and was in the area. This was a great opportunity to check this post office out for wheelchair accessibility. The entrance is at ground level and is easy to get to the door. The entry doors are narrow and I found it was a tight fit getting my wheelchair through it. I needed to ask my friend to open both doors so I could get in with my wheelchair as my chair is a tilt in space wheelchair which is wider than most wheelchairs.

The doors are not automatic which is something I hope one day all public places will realize how important it is to the disabled to have automatic doors. It’s hard to open one door to get into a place and wheel your chair at once but to open two doors to get in is near impossible for most in wheelchairs. Once inside you will be in a room where the post office boxes are and you need to go through yet another door to get to the service area.

The door to the service area is quite small and is a tight fit going though. This door is not automatic either. The service area in this post office is very small and there are tables on the back wall opposite the windows for service. The tables make it a tight squeeze in this area.  There is no window for Wheelchair accessibility for service.  This makes it difficult for me to get my transaction done but the woman working there reached all the way over to help me.

I give the East Taunton Station Post Office TWO STARS. They can earn the other Three Stars if they install automatic doors on all doors leading to the service area,  widen the entrance door to the service area, remove the tables from the service area so there is more room to maneuver a wheelchair and install a window for persons in wheelchairs to get their postal business done in a normal fashion like everyone else.
