povo_logo_onblue1.jpgThe Traveling Wheelchair by Kenny & Co is Proud to announce that we are partnering with Povo of Boston ( http://boston.povo.com/) and Jean Ann McLaughlin, publisher of the Cape Cod Disability Access Directory  in a type of collaboration on ‘Accessibility’.

Povo is a new a hyper-local on-line collaborative guide.  Kenny & Co met with Sean McDevitt, CEO of Povo and he explained to us that ‘Povo aims to do for all the places we live, work, and play’ what Wikipedia has done for information on facts and figures and “knowledge”…applying the same user-generated integrative approach to revolutionize the detail of information available to people on local places.

Sean explained that ‘Povo originally had added a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to list accessibility of places on their site because they believe accessibility is important. They noticed that virtually no local sites similar to Povo even provided any accessibility information and that there is no comprehensive list anywhere that seems to have the information’.

Sean told us that they soon discovered that much of the information places provide on accessibility was incomplete and inadequate. Then they read ‘ A Matter of Access’ written by Emily Sweeney  that was published  in Globe South of The Boston Globe on August 14, 2008 and contacted us and Jean to learn more.

Sean and others at Povo also discovered that there is no standard Logo that covers all ‘Accessibility’ possibilities so they have implemented 3 new levels of Accessibility on their site and developed new Accessibility Images (Logos) for these ratings. Povo’s rating system will be very similar to Jean’s at Cape Cod Disability Access Directory and our STAR rating at The Traveling Wheelchair.

Povo’s new Accessibility ratings will include Full Access, Partial Access or No Access and their new Accessibility Logos will be:

The starting point is no rating in hope that users who visit these places will rate the accessibility so that this type of inside knowledge can be made available to all!

Povo is a great new exciting site and we recommend All persons with Accessibility issues check it out at http://boston.povo.com/ and hope many will add their ratings for what level of accessibility is offered by establishments.  As we all add our opinions, many more listings on Povo will have an accurate Accessibility rating!

Povo is Creative Commons licensed company so all their content and functionality is not only user created, but is also freely available and FREE for all to use.

Kenny & company THANKS Povo for caring and understanding the importance of Accessibility.

We can all work together ”To help make the world more sensitive, respectful and accessible to all.”
