ryans-amusement-buzzard-bay-001.jpgMy roommate, Josh and I love to bowl. Last week our friends, Tony and Ric took us to Ryan Family Amusement in Buzzards Bay to bowl a few games.  I found Ryan Family Amusement is wheelchair accessible but was very disappointed to find there is NO wheelchair accessible restroom.

There are handicapped parking spaces located in the front near the access slope to the sidewalk. The entry door is not automatic but is wide enough to fit my chair with ease; I was in my manual chair so Tony held the door open while Ric pushed my chair inside.

We used one of the bowling lanes and bowled a few games and had a blast! I was able to access the bowling lane with no problem; there are some green bowling ramps that people in wheelchairs can use to help them bowl; you place the ball on it and push it off; I tried it but preferred to throw the bowling ball myself.

We also checked out the game room and I was pleased to find it wheelchair accessible; I could play all the games and the games are a lot of fun too!

When I needed to use the restroom I found a HUGE PROBLEM in that the restroom is NOT wheelchair accessible; the restroom is too small for me to fit my chair inside and close the door; even if I could fit my chair inside; the stall is too small for my chair; I couldn’t even access the urinal privately :-( I felt terrible because we all had to leave so I could find an accessible restroom.

I believe having no accessible public restroom in a recreational facility is violation of Section 30 of the AAB/MA - Massachusetts Architectural Access Board .You can read Section 30: PUBLIC TOILET ROOMS at http://www.mass.gov/Eeops/docs/dps/aab_regs/521030.txt.

The employees here are all very helpful and friendly and they all deserve FIVE STARS for the courteous service they provided to my friends and me.

I give Ryan’s Amusement only TWO STARS for wheelchair accessibility because having an accessible restroom is very important. In order to earn the other Three Stars they would need to install an automatic door so a person in a wheelchair can enter and exit independently; and redesign the restrooms so they are wheelchair accessible.
