sandwichshopl-016.jpgWhile traveling in Sandwich, my friends and I stopped to grab a bite to eat at Sandwich Pizza House. We were very disappointed to find that this restaurant is not very wheelchair accessible :<)

sandwichshopl-011.jpgThe Sandwich Pizza House is located in the Sandwich Mini Mall. There are plenty of handicap parking spaces located on the far left side of the mall’s parking lot; we were disappointed with the location of the handicap parking spaces; the handicap parking spaces are quite a distance from the wheelchair access slope to the sidewalk. Because of this, my friends and I parked in a general parking space, close to the wheelchair access to the sidewalk, far from the handicap parking spaces.

We gained access to the sidewalk and approached the entry doors of the Sandwich Pizza House. You will definitely need help entering this restaurant in a wheelchair; there are two entry doors; the entry doors are not automatic; the doors are not in the same direct path; the turn to the second entry door is very tight; both doors are wide enough for my wheelchair to fit through. My friends had to hold the both doors open at the same time for me to get my wheelchair into the restaurant.

sandwich-sandwichshopl-015.jpgThe service counter where you order your food is too high for any size wheelchair. The employee who took our food order was very kind, courteous and friendly. All the employees were very friendly; one employee even bought my food to the table of my booth. My friends and all thought that the food was very good.

sandwich-shop-014.jpgThere are only booths and no tables; the booths are not wheelchair accessible; my wheelchair did not fit under the table of the booth; I managed to sit at the end; my wheelchair stuck out into the aisle; my friends helped me reach for my food and drinks.

The restroom is not wheelchair accessible: it is a very small restroom; I was unable to fit my wheelchair into the restroom :<) Ric, my friend did go inside the restroom; Ric reports that there are no required safety grab bars located on the side or rear wall of the toilet; the pipes underneath the sink are not covered as is now ADA required.

I give the Sandwich Pizza House ONE STAR for wheelchair accessibility and ONLY because I managed to enter this restaurant.  In order to earn the other Four Stars, they would need to: install automatic entry doors so a person in a wheelchair can enter independently; lower a section of the ordering counter to a wheelchair accessible height; place a few wheelchair accessible tables in the dining area; enlarge the restrooms so a wheelchair can fit inside; install ADA required safety grab bars on the wall to the side and rear of the toilet; place protective covering around the exposed pipes underneath the accessible sink.

The owner of the Sandwich Mini Mall, where this restaurant is located,  should relocate the handicap parking spaces close to the wheelchair access to the sidewalk or place more wheelchair access slopes to the sidewalk.
