sandwichtav-001.jpgYesterday, while my friends and I were traveling through Sandwich we stopped for lunch at Sandwich Taverna and found it is wheelchair accessible with just a few minor exceptions. The restaurant beautiful for it is set in a southwestern motif with a comforting fireplace, cactuses, pictures of classical westerns, especially of Clint Eastwood and walls of earth tone colors.

sandwich-tav-003.jpgThere is a front and rear entrance to the restaurant and both are wheelchair accessible but handicap parking is only available in the front parking lot close to the front entrance.  No handicap parking spaces are located in the rear parking lot. Both entrances have wonderful sloped cement walkways that lead to the entry doors but neither door is automatic so you may need help with opening the door.

sandwichtav-005.jpgMy friends and I were seated in a dinning area in the center of the restaurant which is very spacious and the table is a perfect height for me in my wheelchair. I found the lighting to be very good too. I enjoyed the comfortable atmosphere, the fireplace and the four large flat screen TVs that are located on all four walls. Our waitress told us that the TV’s are usually turned on for a NE Patriot, Red Sox, Celtic or Bruins game.

sandwich-tav007.jpgIn the rear of the restaurant is a beautifully decorated Bar/Lounge area that is not wheelchair accessible. The tables in this room are all too high for my wheelchair and some booths are positioned high up on another level. If I sat at a booth on the main level in this room my wheelchair would stick out too far into the aisle for the end of the booths are very close to the tall tables.  The bar, like most bars is too high for me to sit at. Large flat screen TV’s are placed on the walls in this room too.

Restrooms are great! There is a large handicap stall that has all the required safety bars and lots of space for me to maneuver around. The sink, soap dispenser, towel dispenser and mirror is all at a good height and the pipes under the accessible sink are covered which is now ADA required.

Our waitress was very hospitable, sensitive and kind and our food and service was exceptional

I give Sandwich Taverna THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Two Stars, they would need to install an automatic entry door and place some wheelchair accessible tables in the Bar/Lounge area so it is at least partially accessible. It would be a plus if they lowered a small section of the bar so that a section of it would be wheelchair accessible.
