After an appointment at  Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center my mom, Ric, Amanda and I headed to New England Aquarium. Before visiting the aquarium we stopped for lunch at Sel de la Terre, a great French restaurant and were pleased to find it very wheelchair friendly and accessible.

There are two sets of double entry doors you will need help opening for neither is automatic. Located in a small foyer between the entry doors is a bakery where you can purchase bread, deserts, bottled drinks, and yogurt to take home.

Once inside the restaurant we were warmly greeted by a kind hostess who showed us to our table. All the tables are of a perfect wheelchair accessible height. Sel de la Terre has a great atmosphere. The space is warm, well lit and open. We all enjoyed our delicious chicken sandwich. Our waitress was very kind and attentive and the service was excellent.

A bar/lounge area is located to the side. The bar is not wheelchair accessible because it is too high for me to reach; yet there are plenty of accessible tables in this lounge. The ADA does not require a bar to be wheelchair accessible if an accessible table is adjacent to the bar. Yet I think all bars should have an accessible area for a customer in a wheelchair to sit and enjoy a drink like all other customers can choose to do.

The restrooms are spacious, wheelchair accessible and fully ADA compliant except the pipes underneath the accessible sink are not covered. I had no problem reaching the faucet, soap or hand towels placed next to the sink. The mirror above the sink is a little too high for me to see yet there is a full length mirror which is fully accessible.

I give Sel de la Terre FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the Fifth Star that would need to install automatic entry doors so a patron in a wheelchair can enter and exit independently; lower a section of the bar to a wheelchair accessible height so a patron in a wheelchair can enjoy a drink or meal at the bar; and cover the pipes under the accessible sink in the restroom as is ADA required.
