Since all of my doctors are at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), I often eat lunch at the Souper Salad restaurant which is located in the lobby of the Carl J. Shapiro Center at BIDMC. Today, I was there for an appointment so I decided it was a good time to review the place for wheelchair accessibility.
The Souper Salad has two different entries, one from inside the hospital lobby and one from the outside dining area in front of the hospital. Neither entry door is automatic so you’ll need help in opening both entry doors. It really surprises me that an eating place inside a hospital doesn’t have automatic doors because many people like me in wheelchairs stop by before or after an appointment for a quick bite to eat or just for a drink!
Once inside, the tables are very close together by the lobby entrance door and it is hard to get my wheelchair by the tables to get to the front where you order your food. It’s also hard to find a table to eat at that has enough space for my wheelchair since they are so crowded together. If you eat outside in the warmer weather, like today you will have no obstacles to get to the front area to order your food or fitting your wheelchair at an outside table.
The tables inside and outside are all a good height for my wheelchair. Souper Salad has many healthy choice luncheon items to choose from and a great salad bar too. I can see most of the items in the salad bar but can’t reach over it to put it on my plate because the salad bar is too high for me. The staff have always been very courteous and helpful.
I give Souper Salad THREE STARS. They could earn the other Two Stars if they installed automatic doors at both entries, moved some of the tables further apart and away from the passage area from lobby entry door to front area and lower the salad bar.
April 20, 2009 – Review after renovations completed:
Souper Salad recently expanded the dining room. There is now plenty of space between the tables and more wheelchair accessible tables. I now give Souper Salad FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. They just need to install automatic entry doors and lower the salad bar to get the Fifth Star.

I too enjoy eating at Souper Salad. One of the things I love the most is they have more than just salads! They have pastas, pizzas, soups, baked potatoes and more. Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean feeling like a rabbit by eating lettuce all the time! ;)

Hi Vincent, I too love all the food choices they have and I especially love the Bostonian Wrap and the Chicken Caesar Wrap. I mentioned the salad bar because it’s the only food item that is self serve and I can’t reach it from my wheelchair.I’ll add the link you sent us And thanks for the tip on the coupons! Kenny

Hey Kenny, I’ve been to Souper Salad at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Shapiro too. You’re right on target! The tables inside are really way too close for confort! I’ve eaten outside on a warm day and much better and more room for my wheelchair. Great job on review. Kevin

This letter is to the top executives of Souper Salad in regard to your store in the Town East shopping area in Mesquite, Texas. First I am a regular customer and I have eaten eat lunch there about 5-6 times a week for years. I have heard through the proverbial grapevine that Scott the manager might be leaving your organization because of a supervisor who seems determined to terminate him. I can tell you without reservation that Scott and his staff are the VERY best there is. I have seen Scott do everything but bend over backward to make the customers happy. I have seen this time and time again. Return customers are many and new ones come in all the time. Not only has Scott and his staff (one by the way was honored recently as the best server of the year) made the store one of the top stores they have created a great environment for eating. I don’t know who is trying to terminate Scott but they are going to lose a top manager in their organization. Obviously whoever evaluates Scott has no clue to what they are doing. It only goes to show that there are supervisor high up on your totem pole in which ignorance is no disadvantage for advancement, Thank you.
