After an enjoyable lunch at
The Playwright Restaurant & Bar in South Boston, my mom, friends and I headed back to our van. We passed by South Boston Animal Hospital and were very disappointed to find it is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step blocking wheelchair access to the entry door.
What a shame we all thought. :<) This animal hospital is not accessible to a pet loving wheeler living in this area who owns a pet.
I give South Boston Animal Hospital ZERO STARS for not being wheelchair accessible. In order to earn any Stars, they would simply need to replace the step with a sloped walkway like many of the other places of business have done on this street.

Not saying this is an excuse in any way but many public highway facing entrances are unable to place ‘permanent’ ramps due to causing an obstruction to passers by, however a solution needs to be found and a ‘portable’ ramp with signage and call for assistance bell would do the trick.
As a wheelchair user myself, I would probably have told them of the problems they are creating and reminded them of the many thousands of service animals (especially dogs) that accompany disabled people and the fact they are denying them access as well as denying access to many disabled people that simply want one of their dogs as a pet.
Be interesting to see what would happen if you rang them and said ‘Hi, I really love what you are doing for the unwanted animals, I’d very much like to make a large donation, only problem is when I tried to enter your building to give you the cheque I was unable to enter as a wheelchair user’.
Bet a ramp would soon materialize then!

Hello,
You make some very good points. My mom did ask if they have a wheelchair accessible entrance and she was told “No, it is just the step-up entrance”.
This small step at the threshold could easily be removed and replaced with a cement slope, like many of the other places of businesses have done on this street. This would not cause an obstruction to the others walking along the sidewalk for for it is set inward.
Check out the picture of the sloped entrance at The Playwright Restaurant & Bar in South Boston and you can see the sloped threshold which was once a step. The link is http://thetravelingwheelchair.com/the-playwright-restaurant-bar-in-south-boston/.
In this year of 2009, we do not find any acceptable reason for a place of business who serves the public to deny wheelchair accessible.
Thanks,
