I went to Spankys for an ARC event and I was not that impressed with the fact that they were not that handicapped accessible. The parking was one thing I was impressed with, the parking was about 30 ft from the entrance. There was no ramp but it wasn’t needed because it was all level up to the door. The door was not automatic and also not very wide. I had to have someone hold the door open for me and help me maneuver back and forth to fit through the door.
Once inside Spanky’s, there really wasn’t much room to get around in a wheelchair. There were only two tables that were handicapped accessible and that would be a problem if more than two handicapped families wanted sit and have dinner at the same time. The isles were too narrow for a wheelchair to get through.
The restrooms are not handicapped accessible at all. There is only one restroom for women and one for men and neither one is handicapped accessible at all. The doors to the restrooms are not even wide enough for a wheelchair to fit through, so the restrooms are a big issue. The pipes under the sink are not covered from what I could see sitting outside the door. And I did not see grab bars either.
The tables are at a good height for someone in a wheelchair. I didn’t having a problem at all fitting my chair under the tables. I strongly suggest that someone that is visually impaired to go the restaurant during the day because the lighting is not the best.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. I have a reflex with my right arm and the waitress didn’t know that and she came on my right side to bring the drinks. I had a reflex and knocked the tray of drinks out of her hand and the drinks went everywhere. The drinks went in my staffs lap and all over the floor. The waitress was very apologetic.
In my opinion Spanky’s in Hyannis gets ONE STAR for wheelchair accessibility. They need to do a lot of work to get a perfect 5 Stars. In order to get one star they would have to put in automatic doors, to get the second star they would have to widen the aisles enough for a wheelchair to fit through, to get the third star they would have to put in handicapped accessible restrooms and to get the fourth star they would have to improve the lighting.
