sushijoy02.jpgFriday, my friends Kevin and Josh and I went to the newly opened Sushi Joy at Old Colony Plaza in Plymouth. Sushi Joy used to be located on Samoset Street in Plymouth; the owner needed more space so it is now open at Colony Place. The food and service is great but the restaurant is not very wheelchair accessible.

joy-sushi-002.jpgThere are plenty of handicap parking spaces in Colony Place parking lot, close to this restaurant. Access to the sidewalk is safe and easy from the parking lot for there is a crosswalk.

joy-sushi-006.jpgEntering in a wheelchair is tough. I was in my manual chair and Josh had to hold both sets of entry doors open for Kevin to wheel me inside because two separate entry doors are not automatic. When going in the first entry door on the left, there a tight turns to reach the second entry door.

The host/hostess counter is of a good height for my wheelchair; the dining room has plenty of tables, which also of a good height for wheelchairs. YET the tables are set too close together, leaving little room for me to get around in my chair. Other customers were inconvenienced for they had to get up from their seats so I could wheel by to my table. The menu has a lot of unique Japanese and Chinese dishes; it serves one of my favorite Asian dishes sushi. Our waitress was very courteous, respectful and kind to me and my friends; the food was DELICIOUS!

joy-sushi-008.jpgThe Sushi Bar is not wheelchair accessible for the counter is too high for my chair; the large screen TV is easy for all to see. A bar, which serves alcoholic beverages is located in the front of the restaurant; this bar is not wheelchair accessible either for the countertop is too high; ADA doesn’t require a bar to be accessible yet Kenny & Co believes all bars should have a section that is wheelchair accessible.

The restrooms are spacious, wheelchair accessible and fully ADA compliant; the faucet, soap and towel dispenser are within my reach and the pipes under the accessible sink are covered as is ADA required

joy-sushi-004.jpgI give Sushi Joy TWO STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Three Stars, they would need to install automatic entry doors; space the tables further apart; lower a section of the Sushi Bar to a wheelchair accessible height; and lower a section of the bar to a wheelchair accessible height. This would provide full & equal access for all their customers. The food and service deserve 5 Stars!
