I went to a function at The Riverway Lobster House and I want to share my opinion with others on how wheelchair accessible it is. I will start with the parking. The handicapped parking is very close to the entrance of the restaurant.
There is a ramp to the entrance of the restaurant which makes it easy for someone in a wheelchair to get to the front doors. The ramp was perfect height and width for me in my wheelchair. The only difficulty I found getting into the restaurant was the doors. They were not automatic. So someone in a wheelchair would absolutely have to have someone hold the doors open in order to get inside. If someone in a wheelchair had some help with the doors they are plenty wide enough for the chair to enter.
Ok, now once inside there is plenty of room for a wheelchair to move about without interfering with other things going on in the restaurant. I love that the place is big and roomy so that I don’t have to worry about bumping into things. The tables are at just the right height for a person in a wheelchair. The staff is very friendly; they always made eye contact with me when speaking to me. And they always talked directly to me instead of the people I was with. Sometimes, people don’t even realize what they are doing but it really hurts my feelings when people treat me differently than others. Just because I have a handicap does not mean that I cannot hear and answer for myself. The lighting was perfect for anyone with a visual impairment.
The restroom doors were wide enough for me to get through. The restrooms are also handicapped accessible. The stalls were wide enough for me to get my chair into and they also have grab bars. There is also plastic coating under the sink on the piping.
I give The Riverway Lobster House in South Yarmouth FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. They could earn the Fifth Star by installing automatic doors.
