After my appointment at
Healthtrax Fitness Center, my friends and I went to the Westport U.S. Post Office to mail a letter. We like to visit different U.S. Post Offices throughout Massachusetts to see how accessible they are, especially since we’ve discovered that there are four U.S. Post Offices in our area which have no access. We were very pleased to see that this post office is wheelchair accessible with only two problems that can easily be corrected.
There are three handicap parking spaces conveniently located in the parking lot, close to the wheelchair access to the sidewalk. There are two entry doors you will need help with opening for neither is automatic.
Once inside I was pleased to see that the Document Service Counter where you fill out your postal mailing slips is of a perfect wheelchair accessible height.
The letter slot where you place your stamped mail in is also of a perfect wheelchair accessible height; I could reach it easily and had no problem placing my letter into the slot.
None of the Customer Service Counters in this U.S. Post Office are wheelchair accessible for all are too high for any size wheelchair. The height of the customer service window is approximately 48″ high; the tip of my head reaches the top; it is way too high for me to reach. If I was in my Permobil Power Chair, I would have been able to elevate my seat to a reachable height, but I was in my manual wheelchair today because it is the one I take to the fitness center.
I give Westport U.S. Post Office THREE STARS for wheelchair accessibility. In order to earn the other Two Stars, they would simply need to install automatic entry doors and lower one of the Customer Service Counters to a wheelchair accessible height so a person in a wheelchair can independently access this U.S. Post Office and complete their Postal business.

I am very interested in making the post office more accessible to all. We are forming a committee working on these issues which will voted on the first week in May at Town Meeting.
The address listed here is incorrect, the pictures you have posted are from the North End Post office on State Rd. (Rte. 6).
I am also concerned of wheel chair access from the adjoining parking to the post office, there is no curb cut.
Feel free to offer more suggestions

Dear Selectman Ouellette,
I think it’s WONDERFUL that you want to make this U.S. Post office more accessible! I will revisit soon to see if my friends and I have any more suggestions. I corrected the address.
THANK YOU!

Dear Selectman Ouellette,
Let me first, congratulate you on the outstanding job you are doing regarding your representation of Westport residents.
My husband has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease which, has caused him to be wheelchair bound. Needless to say, his mobility is quite limited. Therefore, something we all take for granted such as, going to the post office is quite the challenge for him. Thank you on behalf of my husband for championing such a worthy cause.
