I go to church at the Zion Union Church in Hyannis. This week, I paid special attention so that I could rate their wheelchair accessibility. The handicap parking is very close to the entry door, which is wide but not automatic, though it has been propped open most every time I’ve visited. There is no need for a ramp since the entrance is on ground level.
This church is one year old and it was very well thought out to accommodate everybody, including the disabled population. There is lots of room for people in wheelchairs to move around and part-take in the service. The lighting is very good and appropriate for people with visual impairment. Tables are rarely used, but when they are, my wheelchair fits well under the table.
As far as the restroom goes it has everything necessary for a disabled person and meets all the ADA requirements. There are protective coverings on the pipes under the accessible sink and the safety grab bars are located at a perfect height.
My first visit to Zion Union Church was a couple of months ago, when a friend brought me. From that first day on I have felt very comfortable and at home there. People are so friendly and respectful of each other. They speak directly to me and call me “Sister Nicole”. Before my visit here I thought church services were boring and put me to sleep, but here I certainly stay awake! The whole congregation is very much a part of the service, and there is laughter and lightheartedness as well as the comfort of prayer.
I very much recommend Zion Union Church to anyone looking for a church to attend. Since I started going to the services so many good things have happened in my life and I can’t imagine a Sunday without it. Maybe you’ll have the same experience that I had a couple of months ago. It’s definitely worth a visit to find out!
I give the Zion Union Church FOUR STARS for wheelchair accessibility. To earn a fifth star all that’s needed is an automatic door.

You would be very happy with this church because there is a ramp to get onto the stage. There is a seperate room for people in wheelchairs that has a walk-in area that looks like a shower for baptising. I can get anywhere I need to.
